

ASH – Nellie Smith Rising, 71, of Shallotte, died Monday Sept. 19, 2016 at Grand Strand Medical Center.
Mrs. Rising was born in Brunswick County on Oct. 9, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Reverend Anson Smith and Anneliza Simmons Smith. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Kim Evans, and a sister, Helen S. Inman.
She was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Ash. Nellie was a police officer with Shallotte Police Department for many years and also the Sunset Beach Police Department. She was an advocate for domestic violence and worked with the Hope Harbor Home of Brunswick County. She was devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Archie Rising Jr.; her children, Lagrant Evans and wife, Marilyn, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Renee Beale and husband, Mason, of Windsor, North Carolina, Archie Braswell III and wife Tonya of Zebulon, North Carolina, Allen Braswell and wife, Teresa, of Nashville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Jessica Evans, Brittany Braswell, Justin Braswell, Katie Braswell, Austin Evans, Chapel Evans; great-grandchildren, Paisley Braswell, Bailey Powell, Dakota Powell, Carter Braswell, Jeffery Braswell; a sister, Mary Lou Kitchens of Atlanta, Georgia. Two very special people who Nellie considered family and who spent numerous hours in the Rising home with her children are Chad and Hamilton Gray and their children, Ethan and Zoey.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at 2 p.m. at New Britton Baptist Church, with Reverend Doug Fairfax officiating. An interment service will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, from 7-9 p.m. at White Funeral and Cremation Service, 3660 express Drive, Shallotte.
