WILMINGTON — Kay Tice Crowley, of Wilmington, N.C., died in New Hanover Regional Medical Center around daybreak on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, surrounded by people who loved her.

Kay was born Kathryn Alleen Phelps in Wilson, N.C., on April 15, 1945, to the late Lewis Marshall Phelps Sr. and Marion Whitlock Phelps. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, William D Tice Jr., and a brother, Lewis Marshall Phelps Jr.

Kay attended Fike High School and Atlantic Christian College, (now Barton College), both in Wilson. Kay was a grandmother, mother, wife, sister, artist, hairdresser and friend to many over the years.

Kay is survived by her husband, Robert Sidbury Crowley of the home; her daughter Karen Tice Lawrie and husband Kevin of Carolina Beach, N.C.; her son, Matthew Tice of Williamston, N.C.; and her brother, Marion Phelps and wife Kim of Wilmington. She is also survived by her step-children: Lora Crowley, John Crowley, and Worth Crowley and wife Andrea, all of Wilmington.

Kay’s greatest joy over the last years of her life were her grandchildren: Sadie Tice, Violet Tice, Hannah Lawrie, Wynton Lawrie, Jordan Crowley, Ben Crowley, and Jon Crowley. Even during the toughest days of her illness, any mention of any of her “grandbabies” would bring a smile to her face.

Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Northside Baptist Church 2501 N College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28405.
