WILMINGTON — George Willis Moore, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center after an extended illness. Mr. Moore was born in Marion, Ohio, Aug. 1, 1927, to the late Jonathan David “J.D.” Moore and Gladys Lucille Hunt Moore.
He was the youngest of five siblings, Doris Lucille Moore Maeda, William Owen “Bud” Moore, Margaret Belle Moore Keefauver and Richard David “R.D.” Moore, all of whom predeceased him.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Haldane Moore, their son, Jeffrey David Moore, and his spouse, Katherine Kiyo Sakuma Moore, of Oakland, Calif.; and daughter, Mary Christine Moore of Wilmington. He also leaves behind his first wife, Marilyn Francis Schillinger, their son, Thomas Alan Moore, and his spouse, Leah Marie Bill Moore, of Marion; and son, Steven George Moore, and his spouse, Kristi Sue Snavely Moore, of Green Camp, Ohio. He is survived by six grandchildren, Holly Lynn Moore Vernon, daughter of Steven, Tomi Nicole Moore, Zachary Thomas and Clayton Joshua Moore, children of Thomas, and Dylan Tatsuo and Jonathan Daisuke Moore, sons of Jeffrey and Katherine. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Ethan Jarold and Cade Austin Moore, sons of Tomi, and her husband, Caleb Israel Moore, and Kurrera Olivia and Keelan Jesse Vernon, children of Holly.
Mr. Moore graduated from Harding High School in 1945 in Marion and served as a seaman, second class in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. As a young man, he worked on the Erie-Lackawanna railroad, as did his father and brothers. For most of his life, he worked in sales and traveled throughout the eastern United States. In 1991, he and Mary moved from New Jersey to Wilmington to retire, where they have been residents of the Cedar Ridge and Cambridge Village communities. He enjoyed golf, country and western music, reading, and he was a member of the American Legion Post 10 in Wilmington.
