On Saturday morning, Dec. 10, 2016, Joe Burney Peters,  affectionately known to his family as “Pop,” passed from this life into the heavenly realm to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His wife and three children were by his side.

He was born May 13, 1934, the oldest of six sons born to Saraetta and Gibson N. Peters of White Oak, N.C. He was married to Joanne Smith Peters for over 50 years until she was taken from us prematurely in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Peters; daughters, Pam Chitwood and Diane Searle; and son, Wayne Peters. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He lived most of his life in Fayetteville, N.C., where he operated Exxon service stations. He relocated to Wilmington in 1986 and operated Oleander Exxon and Wilmington Paint & Body Works.

A visitation for Mr. Joe Burney Peters will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the funeral home with Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Oleander Memorial Park.
