

BOLIVIA — Christopher Wesley Young, 40, died on Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. He bore his suffering with grace and with good humor and a contagious joy that was a gift to all who knew him.
Chris was born in Stoneham, Mass., on April 9, 1976. He attended schools in Columbia, S.C., and graduated from Irmo High School. He also studied at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington.
Chris enjoyed sports and music. He played basketball, tennis, golf and piano. His special interest and gift was writing. He published three volumes of poetry and “neologisms” and maintained a satirical blog that poked gentle fun at politics and culture. Chris was a regular communicant at the Basilica of Saint Mary and at Saint Mark Catholic Church in Wilmington. He was known for his devotion to the Blessed Mother and was a member of several prayer groups.
Chris is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sue and Jim MacCallum of Bolivia, N.C., and by his father, Benedict Young, C.J. of Orleans, Mass. He also leaves numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles and many cherished friends who shared his journey.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Saint Mark Catholic Church, 1011 Eastwood Road, Wilmington. A reception will follow at the church. A burial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Cape Fear Memorial Park on highway 211 in Southport.
