Vera Mae Manning Burton, 97, loved her profession as a registered nurse

WILMINGTON — Vera Mae Manning Burton, age 97, of Castle Hayne died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She was born on Dec. 29, 1919 to Henry Meredith Manning and Helen Frances Simmons.

Mrs. Burton was predeceased by her parents; husband, Clarence Wilber Burton; daughter Helen Swinson; son Clarence Burton; sisters Erma Bass and Mary Lee; brothers Henry Manning, James William “Jimmy” Manning, Carl Manning and Robert Manning; and grandson, Marvin “Marty” Swinson.

She graduated from James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, her loved profession for over 20 years, and served as a caregiver to many over the years. Vera was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church for nearly 80 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Vera Mae Wade and husband Ben of Clyde, N.C.; two sons: Robert Earl Burton and wife Carolyn of Wilmington, Charles William Burton and wife Faye of Watha, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Patsy Burton of Castle Hayne; brother, Raymond Manning and wife Jackie of Hubert, N.C.; special niece, Brenda Echerer and husband Larry of Chapin, S.C.; eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank her special caregivers; Katherine Burton (granddaughter), Roxie McCoy, Rosetta White, Martha Merrick.

A graveside service will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at Oleander Memorial Gardens officiated by Reverend Mike Lewis and Reverend Robert Swart.
