

SURF CITY – Dalton L. Powers, 79, of Surf City, North Carolina, passed away Sept. 5, 2016 at New Hanover Medical Center. He was born in Erwin, North Carolina, on July 8, 1937.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eddie Powers and Annie Avery; brother, J.C. Powers; and sister, Rozena McLeod.
He served his country honorably for 27 years in the USAF. He worked in many capacities after beginning his career as a jet mechanic. He was a member of the Honor Guard in his early years and was the recipient of many awards and medals including the bronze star. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Holly Ridge, North Carolina.
He leaves behind a wife of 56 years, Betty Jo (BJ) Dozier Powers, who was his constant friend, companion and helpmate. He was exceedingly thankful and proud of his family, a daughter, Kathy Garrett of Raleigh, son, Greg Powers and wife, Ann of Clayton; four grandchildren, Samantha Garrett of Tampa, Florida, Andrew Powers of Raleigh, Hannah Garrett of Wilmington and Alli Powers of Raleigh.
One of his greatest joys was time spent with his grandchildren. He loved people and always took the time to try to bring a smile to those he came in contact with.
Visitation will be held at Providence Baptist Church, 406 East Ocean Road, Holly Ridge, NC at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016. Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. and will be officiated by Rev. “Bo” Osborne and Rev. Buddy Dowd. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Sea Lawn Memorial Park.
