Elaine Smith Hales, 82, remembered for her welcoming smile

WILMINGTON — Elaine Smith Hales, 82, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.

She was born July 4, 1934, in Wayne County, Mich., the daughter of the late Orien and Evangeline Smith.

Mrs. Hales retired from Glen Meade OB-GYN after many years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping with her husband, playing Bingo and doing crafts.

She will always be remembered for her welcoming smile and the kind words that she had for everyone who crossed her path. Her family was the light of her life, and she loved spending every second that she could with her children and grandchildren. She will be truly missed by everyone whose life she has touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 45 years, Louis Francis Hales; and grandson, Ryan Glenn Hales.

She is survived by her four children, Louis Craig Hales, and his wife, Marilyn, of Leland, Debra Stephenson, and her husband, Mike, of Wilmington, Connie Martinez, and her husband, Paul, of Kure Beach, and Kelly Redenbaugh, and her husband, Larry, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Michelle Cayton, Michael Cayton, Morgan Martinez and Larry Redenbaugh III; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Jadyn, Delilah, Brianna, Maryella and Brannick; and one sister, Ruth Kurtsell of Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, April 11, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6th and Market Street, officiated by Pastor Jonathan Conrad and Pastor Mark Opgrand. Burial will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family will see friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the support and services they provide to families at the most difficult times of their lives. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center in memory of Elaine Hales.
