WILMINGTON — James Curry “Jimmy” Schupp Jr. Oct. 31, 1951 – Nov. 3, 2016. If you never met my dad, you truly missed an amazing man.
He was a great southpaw pitcher in Little League, and continued through high school. In college, he married my mom, and they have celebrated 46 wonderful years together. He worked for Textilease for 27 years, and later Del Labs.
He was a fan of “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, Alabama football, Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks. He loved good food, a cold martini with bleu cheese, olives and great music built on poetic lyrics and heartfelt melodies that touched his heart and soul.
But most of all, he loved his family. He was always available for advice, money, support of any kind, and was always ready with a movie quote. His advice to me every time I walked out the door was, “Act like you are somebody.”
He took care of his mother and, later, his 93-year-old aunt who thought he was the greatest nurse you could ever find.
He always made sure that we were very aware how much he loved us, and that he would, without a doubt, miss us like crazy. He would say, “Just because I leave you now doesn’t mean I love you any less.”
He spent his last days being cared for by my mom, my husband and me, and passed away peacefully at home with family by his side. The fact that he passed away just in time for happy hour was not lost on us, so in that vein, allow me to raise my glass to my dad, “Here’s to us, those like us, damn few.”
Go ‘Bama, Roll Tide.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his son, James Curry Schupp III; his father and mother, James Curry Schupp Sr. and Edna Dillon Schupp.
