

WILMINGTON — Kurt “Yank” Lee Sammons, 59, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2016 surrounded by family.
Mr. Sammons was born in Camden, New Jersey, on June 8, 1957. He graduated from Hoggard High School in Wilmington, and then attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
While attending NC State, he was a proud member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He had a passion for baseball and coached for many years. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Wilmington, NC. Mr. Sammons was a great friend to all who knew him, as well as a wonderful father, husband, brother and son.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Wesley Sammons. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Marie Sammons Winkler and husband, Robert, of Wilmington; his wife, Brenda Teal Sammons of Wilmington; his children, Carrie Rebecca Sammons of Nashville, North Carolina, Sgt. Andrew Wesley Sammons, USMC, of Kigali, Rwanda, Leigh Sammons Venters(Trey) of Vanceboro, North Carolina, and Mary Katherine Sammons of Greenville, North Carolina; stepsons, Justin Mitchell Strange (Tina) of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, and Jeremy Paul Strange of Greenville, South Ccarolina; granddaughters, Isabella Leigh Cole and Makenzie Nicole Venters of Vanceboro, North Carolina; brothers, Scott Wesley Sammons(Elaine) and Todd Leonard Sammons(Pam), both of Wilmington; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A service to celebrate Mr. Sammons was held Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at Pine Valley United Methodist Church in Wilmington.
