John Howard Hodge, 76, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening

SOUTHPORT — John Howard Hodge, 76, of Southport, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Hodge was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Robeson County to Yancy Middleton Hodge and Edna Lois Hodge.

He was retired from the United States Coast Guard, having served 20 years, including service in Vietnam.

Mr. Hodge was a member of First Apostolic Church in Southport. John had worked at Lowe’s Home Improvement for many years and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He will be remembered as a man of few words, but when he spoke people listened.

Survivors include his mother, Edna Lois Hodge of Roland, North Carolina; his son, John A. Hodge and wife, Catherine; his daughter, Ruby Hodge, all of Southport; four brothers, Mickey Hodge, Mike Hodge, Walter Hodge and Carroll Hodge; a sister Nancy Carter; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hodge, Rozetta Hodge, Brian Hodge, Jeremy Hodge, and Cagney Hodge; and three great-grandchildren, Destinie Radford, Treynt Hodge, and Cameron Hodge.

Preceding him in death was his father Yancy Middleton Hodge and his wife, Mary Francis Hodge.

The funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the First Apostolic Church with Reverend Vernon David Kelly officiating. Burial at sea will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
