Lawrence Monroe Smith, 70, loved feeding the birds in his garden

WILMINGTON — Lawrence Monroe Smith, 70, of Wilmington, N.C., was called home by his Heavenly Father on Nov. 4, 2016.

He was born in Wilmington, N.C. on Dec. 18, 1945, to the late Thurston Monroe Smith and Mary Roeland Smith.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Moore Smith on April 19, 2012. They were married for 37 years. Also, he was predeceased by his sisters, Bonnie Lewis and Jerri Wagner; and his brother, Thurston M. Smith Jr.

Mr. Smith is survived his loving companion, Patricia Miller Creech Simmons of Wilmington; sister, Mary Smith Roberts of Britthaven Nursing Home; two aunts, Dure Gilligan and Alma Graham; three stepchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

Mr. Smith was a charter member of Oleander United Methodist Church and Devon Park United Methodist Church. He retired from Harris Teeter after 30 years. He attended N.H. High School and graduated in 1965. He loved to go to the Bible bookstores and loved to listen to many pastors preach the Word, he also loved feeding the birds in his garden and fishing.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 8, 2016, at Oleander Methodist Church, 5810 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, N.C. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tara Lane and Pastor Naconiel E. Fullwood officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
