Nicholas Conca, 96, longtime member of the Southport Lion’s Club

LELAND — Nicholas Conca, 96, of Leland, N.C., passed away Nov. 25, 2016, surrounded by loved ones.

Nick was born in Sag Harbor, N.Y. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, beginning in the Atlantic with anti-submarine patrols and ending with the invasion of Okinawa and subsequent occupation of Japan, returning home in 1946.

After the war, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Hofstra University and began working for Pfizer Inc. He also completed his Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and retired from Pfizer after a successful 37-year career. Nick was a longtime member of the Southport Lion’s Club, serving as the chapter treasurer for 18 years.

He was the first of six children born to Ralph and Emily Conca, nee Martocchia. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis Mary Hill, of Southampton, N.Y., as well as his second, Joann Phillips Hinson, of Shelby, N.C.; his sons, James, Ralph and Jeffrey Andrew; his parents; and his sister, Emily.

He is survived by his daughter, Niki, of Dayton, Ohio; son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law, Joy, of Leland, N.C.; grandsons, Jeffrey Andrew II, Matthew and John Nicholas; great-granddaughter, Lilly; brother, Ralph; sisters, Vivian, Theresa and Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Peacock-Newnam and White Funeral and Cremation Service, 1411 N. Howe St., Southport, N.C., from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 1. A requiem Mass will be held at noon Friday, Dec. 2, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5269 Dosher Cutoff S.E., Southport, N.C., followed by inurnment at the Cape Fear Memorial Park, Highway 211, Southport, N.C. A reception will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
