WILMINGTON — James Byron Byrd Sr., 83, of Wilmington, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
James was born in Robeson County on Dec. 3, 1932, to V.O. Byrd and Virginia Lois Singletary Byrd.
James was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church. For many years, he worked in retail sales and had retired from the New Hanover County Water and Sewer in the Engineering Department. James was a member of Federal Point Lodge No. 753 A.F.&A.M. He was an avid Carolina Basketball fan.
James is survived by four children, James Byron Byrd Jr., and his wife, Fawn, Donna Byrd Gasecki, and her husband, Stephen, Alan Thomas Byrd, and his wife, Wendy, and Joe Eldridge Byrd; seven grandchildren, Tennille Gore (Bill), Luke Byrd (Sarah), Joseph Gasecki, Stephen John Gasecki Jr., JoBeth Byrd (Justin Riker), Alexander Byrd and Madison Byrd; six great-grandchildren, Carson, Lydia, Landon, and Laethan Gore and Ava and Hayden Byrd; and one brother, Edward Byrd. Remembered is his wife, Hilda Virginia Byrd, who passed away on May 21, 2015.
The family will see friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Winter Park Baptist Church Family Life Center. Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington. Burial will be in the Byrd Family Cemetery near Orrum, N.C., in Robeson County.
