WILMINGTON – Sarah Mathews Eubanks Blake, 100, of Wilmington, North Carolina, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, peacefully in her sleep, at her residence.
She was born in Wilmington, to the late E.L. Mathews Sr. and Bettie Rogers Mathews, on Jan. 26, 1916.
Sarah spent her life in Wilmington, and cherished her memories of riding the beach car to Lumina Pavilion at Wrightsville Beach to dance and listen to the music of the big bands that played there. She joyously celebrated her 100th birthday in January with over 100 friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Benjamin B. Eubanks Jr. and Bert W. Blake; three brothers, Woodrow, Rogers and Randolph Mathews; a sister, El Myers; with a special remembrance to Sudie “Auntie” Robinson, who was like a second mother to Sarah.
Survivors include her children, David Eubanks (Ann), Suzanne Cavenaugh and Jimmy Eubanks (Bea); grandchildren, Jonnie Dale, Roxanne Bachman, David Eubanks Jr., John Eubanks, Shelley Cavenaugh and Alison Hriciga (Damian); great-grandchildren, Bridget Bachman, Blake Bachman and Bodhi Hriciga; brother, E.L. Mathews Jr. (Betty Lou); step-son, Bert Blake Jr.; step-daughter, Barbara LeHouiler and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at Andrews Market Street Chapel.
Funeral services will be private.
