

WILMINGTON — Everette “Chic” Newman, 90, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2016.
He was born in Columbus County, N.C., on July 8, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Cliff Newman and Stella Newsome Newman; and by his wife of 60 years, Hilda, in 2009.
Everette was a faithful member of Long Leaf Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a proud World War II veteran in the U.S. Army and had retired from Babcock and Wilcox. He loved his church family and enjoyed golfing.
He is survived by his sons, Everette Newman II, and his wife, Nancy, Ronnie Newman, and fiancé, Rosemary Taylor, and James Newman, and his wife, Annette; sister, Eva Thurmond; grandchildren, Megan, Tristan, Logan, Mindy and Chris; and great-grandchildren, Zane, Oden, Lillian and Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Long Leaf Baptist Church, where the family will see friends from 10 a.m. until the service time. The Rev. Clayton Rivenbark will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
