

BURGAW – Robert E. Herring Sr. passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016. at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Mr. Herring was born April 17, 1935, the son of Robert Herring and Virginia Cowan Herring of Burgaw, North Carolina.
He graduated from Burgaw High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman in Killeen, Texas, for two years.
He had a distinguished career in food sales beginning with Sealtest Dairy and Whitebrook Farms. He retired from Kraft Foods after 35 years. He was also the owner and President of Eldercare Convalescent Service/Herring Associates, a private duty home care service. He was a member of Lodge 319 and a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite and Sudan Temple. He was a member and past Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golf and time well spent with family and friends. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carroll Newkirk Herring, two sons, “Robin” E. Herring Jr. (Sharon), Russell Herring (Betsy), and two daughters, Suzanne Goudarzi (Hormoze) all of Wilmington, and Tina Manrique (Ricardo) of Smithfield, Virginia.
He leaves eight grandchildren, Roxanna, Rebecca and Cyrus Goudarzi, Andrea Becker (Doug) and Alexander Manrique, and Lexi, Katie and Caroline Herring.
Also surviving are his brother Morris Herring (Sheila), two sisters, Kay Henderson (Larry) and Janice Eyerman (Jim), and many loving nieces and nephews. He leaves a special companion, Abby, his beagle.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 500 Kenwood Avenue, Wilmington, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
