Martha Patterson “Pat” Kidder Crittenden, 69, teacher and dedicated community member

WILMINGTON – Martha Patterson (Pat) Kidder Crittenden died on Sept. 2, 2016, at home.

She was born on June 13, 1947, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the daughter of George Everard Kidder and Martha Patterson Kidder.

She graduated from St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia, and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. She served on the boards of the Junior League of Wilmington and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of North Carolina.

While serving on the board of the Junior League she was instrumental in the founding of the Domestic Violence Shelter for Women in New Hanover County. She was a past President of the St. Catherine’s School Alumnae Association. She spent 45 years teaching children to find their passion in life and follow it. She also taught Sunday School at St. James Parrish for many years. She was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club of Wrightsville Beach, The Cape Fear Country Club of Wilmington, NC, and the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. An avid gardener, she had a passion for creating a year-round garden.

Mrs. Crittenden is survived by her husband, Thomas Lauriston Crittenden Jr.; and her daughter, Latane’ Crittenden Miller (Adam David); and granddaughter, Harper Patterson Miller. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Kidder Gore (Thomas Carney); a nephew Thomas Kidder Gore; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Purnell Overton, James Carstarphen Purnell V; as well several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation will be at the home of Anne and Tommy Gore, 2118 Gillette Drive on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, from 5 – 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. James Parrish at 2 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2016.
