

WINNABOW — Marie Ellen Pruden Clendenin Young, of Winnabow, North Carolina, age 97, passed from this life Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at Trinity Grove Wilmington
She was born May 30, 1919, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of the late Howard Fenton Pruden and Flossie Gay Shamblen Pruden. Marie was the oldest of three daughters and was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis Jean Pruden McDonald and Beatrice Elaine Pruden Skeen. Also proceeding her passing was her first husband, Sgt. Paul Edward Clendenin; Herbert Brent Young, her loving a devoted husband for over 50 years; and son-in-law, Michael Antin “Tony” Harrison.
Marie graduated from High School in Charleston, W.Va., and began working with Bell Telephone through World War II. She married Herbert Brent Young on Nov. 20, 1944, in Charleston, W.Va., and they spent a life together until his death in 1996. During his employment with Dupont, Marie and Herb moved 14 times before settling in Brunswick County, N.C. Marie became a member of the NC Cooperative Extension Homemakers in Town Creek and was an active member of Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington, singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday school.
Marie loved gardening, nightly walks, listening to gospel music, and saving bows and paper from Christmas packages. She was a devoted wife to Herb and enjoyed doting on him. Throughout her life, she deeply enjoyed spending time with her family and loved ones as well as any type of chocolate.
She is survived by her four daughters, Linda Nelson (Mark) of Enid, Okla., Cheryl Cunningham (Dee) of Hemphill, Texas, Becky Harrison of Wilmington, N.C., and Marti Sherman (Mike) of Rougemont, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Chelsea, Sharon, Erin, Ann, Alan, Steven, Seth and Rebecca; six great-grandchildren, Allie, Luke, Logan, Evan, Noah and Lydia; and numerous other loving family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Wilmington.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Trinity Grove’s Memory Care Unit for their dedicated care of Marie.
