WILMINGTON – Matthew Owen Peterson, 39, of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, died Aug. 31, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, from complications of Crohn’s Disease.

He was educated in New Hanover County Schools and attended Cape Fear Community College majoring in Business.

Mr. Peterson was an accomplished woodworker and he loved creating custom furniture. His passion was Star Wars, and he spent years collecting memorabilia, building a collection of which he was most proud. Unfortunately, as his health declined, much of his motivation waned, but he always kept a smile on his face and a kind word on his lips.

His faith in God continued to grow during his illness and on Aug. 17, 2016, from his hospital bed, he requested to dedicate his life to God. Rev. Volley Hanson, a dear family friend baptized him at his bedside bringing a smile to his face and peace to his heart.

Fighting a courageous battle with this debilitating condition for 23 years, he was an inspiration to all who knew him. His friends were never failing and remained dedicated to him throughout his illness, always supportive and available.

He is survived by his devoted mother, Margaret Denise Bessellieu of the home;  a brother, James Michael Peterson II, and a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Peterson, both of Wilmington; a sister, Haley Peterson Haynes of Scotts Hill, North Carolina; and a sister, Cassandra Wright Peterson of Fayetteville, North Carolina; a very special aunt and his mother’s sister, Lucinda Bessellieu Minges of Kinston, North Carolina; and his “Cousin Buddy” Anna Bessellieu McCauley of Masonboro Sound. Survivors also include his father, Mike Peterson; his niece, Gracynne; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and a very special little 5-year-old second cousin, Matthew (Mak), who thought his “Uncle” Matthew “hung the moon.”

A private service will be held at Mr. Peterson’s beloved Masonboro Sound. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
