OAK ISLAND – James Hunter “Jim” Ratcliffe, 85, an iconic figure of Oak Island, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2016 at his home.
He was known for his crooked steam pipe and had managed the Long Beach Pier from 1967 until it closed.
Born in Fayetteville on Nov. 5, 1930 to his loving parents; he had a brother and two sisters. He graduated from Southport High School and had worked for Frito Lay Company for several years before settling down in Oak Island to manage the pier, which was his passion. After his retirement he continued with his hobby of repairing rods and reels.
In Sept. of 2013, Jim suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side, he fought hard to get better each day. Jim loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing.
Survivors include his three sons, Darryl Ratcliffe and his fiancée, Cathy Gaddy, of Winnabow, Donnie Ratcliffe and wife, Robin, of Bolivia, and David Ratcliffe of Oak Island; a daughter Dyan Ratcliffe Beynon and husband, Gil, of Titusville, Florida; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will have a memorial visitation gathering on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service in Southport.
