WILMINGTON — The Rev. Robert Welsh Duvall, 88, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, after a brief illness.
He was a man of great kindness, intellect, humor, and concern for anyone in need. Duty called to serve the country, so he enlisted in the U.S. Army and earned the rank of second lieutenant. He graduated from Clemson University with a major in chemistry. Early in his career as a chemist, he found his true calling to be a minister in the Episcopal Church.
After receiving his master’s degree in theology at The University of the South, he served God in several small congregations in South Carolina and as a chaplain at Virginia Commonwealth University. His interest in computer science led him to teach computer languages at VCU. His students acknowledged his remarkable skills in teaching by voting him favorite instructor in the business school for several years.
He never stopped spreading his message of faith. Even in retirement, he served in churches when needed. Father Bob will be remembered fondly in the many lives he touched.
His wife of 67 years, Ann Trively Duvall, preceded in death as well as one of his brothers.
He is survived by his three daughters, Penelope, Gail and Cheri; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard and Gerald.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 801 11th Ave. N., North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.
