WILMINGTON — Charles Blayney Cartwright, 90, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at home. He was born June 16, 1926, in Westerville, Ohio, to Dana and Helen Cartwright.

He is survived by his wife, Dee Hazelton Cartwright of Wilmington, N.C.; stepdaughter, Kelli B. Vanscoy, and granddaughter, Kaitlyn B. Vanscoy, of Carolina Beach, N.C.; and niece, Lynda Cartwright, and her companion, Bob Gregorio, of Coatsville, Pa.

Upon graduating High School, Charles entered the U.S. Air Force, where he attended gunnery school and became a corporal squadron leader until his honorable discharge in July 1946, when he left to pursue his studies. Charles was an accomplished student with an undergraduate degree in pre-law from Duke University and also obtained a law degree from the University of Miami, Fla.

Charles spent the first part of his working career as a lawyer in Florida before he went back to school to get his CPA license, and then a few years later to get his Series 7 license and opened one of the first ING firms here in North Carolina. Charles loved helping his clients and thrived on constantly finding new things to learn every day of his life. Even into retirement, he spent his days listening to books on tape of college lectures and found enjoyment in talking to his friends and family about the things he would learn.

Charles was a loving husband to his wife, Dee Cartwright. The two were married in 2003 and spent the last 14 years building a life together in Wilmington full of love and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.

The family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Andrews Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington. A funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Andrews Valley Chapel with a graveside service to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
